Why choose root cuttings?
Root cuttings are segments of Paulownia root that develop into a new, genetically identical plant. Compared to seeds, they offer a more direct start and are available for every variety we carry — including hybrids like Pao Tong Z07 and Shan Tong. Under good conditions, our root cuttings have shown up to 98% success in establishment trials.
1. Plant at the right time
The best planting window is spring, after the hard frosts have passed and the soil begins to warm up. In mild regions, autumn planting can also work. Avoid planting during intense frost, drought or extreme heat, as these conditions put unnecessary stress on the young cutting.
2. Prepare the soil
Paulownia thrives in deep, well-drained, aerated soil. Before planting:
- Loosen the soil to a depth of 40–50 cm if possible
- Remove weeds and direct competition around the planting spot
- Avoid compacted or waterlogged areas — standing water is the enemy of healthy roots
A slightly acidic to neutral pH (ideally between 6 and 7) suits Paulownia best, though it adapts to a wider range when the soil is deep and well drained.
3. Plant the cutting correctly
This is the step where orientation matters most:
- Place the cutting slightly inclined, following its natural shape
- The thicker end points upward, the thinner end downward
- Cover with just a few centimetres of soil — the top should sit near the surface
- Firm the soil gently around it to remove air pockets
4. Water thoughtfully
After planting, keep the soil fresh but never waterlogged. Regular, moderate watering during the first few weeks supports rooting. As the plant establishes a deeper root system, it becomes more independent — but during the first summer, consistent moisture is key, especially in warm climates.
5. Watch and support early growth
In the first weeks, be patient. Establishment can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks depending on temperature. As long as the root stays firm and healthy, it can still shoot. Once growth begins, keep weeds down and monitor for pests during the vulnerable early stage.
